Poster for a biographical film. Powidoki (Afterimages) is the last film by Andrzej Wajda. The plot depicts the life of the charismatic artist, Władysław Strzemiński, who refuses to make a career in the trend of socialist realism imposed by the communist authorities. The painter was a pioneer of the Constructivist avant-garde of the interwar period, and the creator of the theory of Unism. In the late 1940s, Władysław Strzemiński created a series of “solarist” paintings; in them, the painter captured so-called afterimages – momentary optical effects caused by looking at the sun after looking away. The ability of the eye to overlap and mix images and the possibility of transferring visual elements from one area into another (typography into illustration, painting into drawing) are phenomena that inspired the visual language of this poster.
